Savory lettuce cups filled with sauteed ground turkey and vegetables in Thai sauce. I’m a long time fan of Asian culture and cuisine and can’t help admiring the variety spices and sauces used. It’s amazing how these condiments bring totally new flavors to ordinary products we use and most of the asian sauces are naturally derived and healthy, compared to U.S. widespread ketchups and yellow mustards:(
One ingredient that makes this dish stand out is fish sauce
Or, also called “tsunami of flavors”. Fish sauce is a product of small fish e.g. anchovies coated in slat and fermented from a few weeks to 2 years. Bringing much coveted savory or umami flavor to dishes, this sauce from East Asia spread all over the world and has been globally by chefs and home cooks. I personally always have a bottle in my fridge.
It’s relatively easy to make your own fish sauce which I will definitely try in the nearest future and share results on my Instagram account ( @gourmet.oz ). Stay tuned.
Back to our sheep. Aside from the flavor, this dish makes a great entree or appetizer (depending on the size of servings) for sharing with friend or a family meal as it is so easy to serve. Bowl with carefully washed lettuce cups (stay healthy) + bowl of turkey mixture + spicy or sriracha sauce.
Perfect recipe for those of us who look to cut carbs and increase fat and protein in our diets. For my vegetarian followers, feel free to substitute turkey with finely chopped mushrooms. tempeh or "Tofurky DIY grounds" products.
